Getting girls interested in science and technology

My name is Kyong Shim and I’m a software engineer at Thomson Reuters in Eagan, Minn. Along with five of my colleagues, I volunteered to represent our business at this year’s Girls & Science 2008 event at the Science Museum of Minnesota in St. Paul on Oct. 11.

The event allowed girls in 4th grade and up to explore their interest in science and to learn more about professions in the fields of science and technology.

You can see some photos on the FOX 9 Web site.

As one of the leading technology employers in Minnesota, I think our presence at the event helped showcase women as leaders in a variety of science and technology fields within Thomson Reuters and West.

We had a delightful time sharing our academic and professional experiences and answering questions from children as well as their parents. Many were interested in what subjects we thought they should take in school to be a good programmer, and what college-level courses would help lay a good foundation for a technology career.

The event was a great opportunity for me and my colleagues to represent Thomson Reuters to the community as intelligent, passionate, and innovative leaders and professionals!

Click on the video below to hear more of my thoughts, as well as from my colleague Wendy Thomas.
