Thomson Reuters is donating meals to people in need

During National Volunteer Week, the Community Relations team at Thomson Reuters in Eagan, Minn., put out a challenge to employees. For every employee who attended a volunteer fair to learn about nonprofit agencies and how their needs have changed in the current economy, the company would donate a meal to Second Harvest Heartland.

Needless to say, employees in Eagan rose to the challenge. In all, 940 meals will be donated.

“Not only is there an increased need with individuals suffering these tough economic times, but nonprofit agencies – and food shelves in particular – have seen an incredible increase in demand as more people need help and fewer are able to donate,” said Martha Field, manager, Community Relations.

A project that shows innovation in action

Peter Jackson, chief scientist and vice president, Thomson Reuters, participated in a panel discussion at the SIAA NetGain Conference in San Francisco.

The topic was innovation and the challenges facing information companies in the digital age and amid the rise of social media.

Jackson, who is on the NetGain Steering Committee, discussed some of what Thomson Reuters has been working on, including the Reuters Insider multimedia project. Jackson’s team is involved in finding new ways to index video online and make it searchable, providing more insight and context to the end-user.

According to Jackson, the project is in beta and close to official release. He says it required new ways of thinking by his teams, and new uses for existing patented technology that’s already fueling many customer applications within the legal business.

In this video interview after the session, Jackson talked about the conference, the innovative work at Thomson Reuters and also provides more specifics on his team’s work on Reuters Insider:

SIIA NetGain Conference

Greetings from the Software and Information Industry Association’s (SIIA) NetGain Conference at the Palace Hotel in San Francisco.

I’m attending the conference for two reasons. One, WestBlog is a finalist for an SIIA CODiE Award in the Best Corporate Blog category and Westlaw Business is a finalist in the category of Best Online Business Information Service.

2009

The second reason is to highlight some of the topics up for discussion at the conference for WestBlog, including a panel this morning on innovation featuring Peter Jackson, chief scientist and vice president, Thomson Reuters.

NetGain has several other interesting sessions on tap, and keynotes from author Judith Estrin, Brewster Kahle of the Internet Archive, Chris Anderson of Wired Magazine and Kara Swisher of D: All Things Digital.

You can follow updates from NetGain here on WestBlog, and on Twitter with the hashtags #netgain or #SIIA.

By the way, the CODiEs will be handed out tomorrow night. We’ll be sure to let you know if we bring home some hardware.

IRS chooses Thomson Reuters

We wanted to let you know that West  has been awarded a new multi-year contract from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) for comprehensive research services, including legal, tax, news and business information.

It means that up to 25,000 IRS professionals across all of its divisions will have access to a special version of Westlaw geared expressly for tax, legal and regulatory research.

“Over the past several years, the Westlaw team has worked closely with the Tax & Accounting businesses of Thomson Reuters to integrate a content set designed specifically for attorneys and tax practitioners researching legal questions,” said President and CEO Peter Warwick, Thomson Reuters, Legal.

“This tax content has been expanded into a unique offering for the IRS, easily managed in a version of Westlaw that uses the structure of the U.S. Federal Tax code as the primary navigational architecture.”

The Westlaw package was customized for the unique needs of IRS staff and agents. Select assets from across the Legal and Tax & Accounting segments of Thomson Reuters, as well as from BNA, are tightly integrated within a tailored Westlaw interface.

The service also enhanced West’s unique KeyCite citator to allow users to quickly and easily retrieve a list of all Westlaw cases and statutes, administrative decisions and analytical sources that cite a particular subsection or paragraph of the tax code.

“We make it our business to know our customers better than anyone else in this industry,” Warwick said. “The IRS Westlaw platform showcases the unique ability of Thomson Reuters to bring together the right mix of content, analysis, technology and customer service to meet the needs of even our most complex customers. The selection by the IRS is a gratifying endorsement for our work and speaks well of the collective strength of Thomson Reuters.”

Eagan TV coverage on the Web

The Star Tribune recently highlighted the Thomson Reuters partnership with Eagan (Minn.) Community Television.

We first mentioned the arrangement in a previous post (“Broadcasting from our basement”) here on WestBlog.

The partnership with the city has resulted in a broadcast studio within the headquarters of our legal businesses in Eagan. The studio also received coverage last week in the St. Paul Pioneer Press.

E-TV also has gotten coverage in the community newspapers that serve Eagan, including an article and video in This Week Eagan and a story and video on YouTube from the Eagan Sun-Current.

Broadcasting from our basement

etvimage

The city of Eagan, Minn.’s community access television studio, E-TV, has a new home on the Eagan campus of Thomson Reuters.

When word spread that the city needed a new location for its community access television studio, Thomson Reuters opened its doors – making this a first-of-its-kind public/corporate partnership in the country.

A grand opening launch took place on Feb. 25 featuring a live broadcast with Peter Warwick, president and CEO of the legal businesses of Thomson Reuters and Eagan Mayor Mike Maguire. (Watch a video interview with Maguire)

Warwick believes this partnership promises benefits both to Thomson Reuters and the city of Eagan. (Watch a video interview with Warwick)

Tom Garrison, communications director for the city, was quick to recognize the potential of this unique partnership. “We’ll be able to provide the professional, reliable public access television coverage the community has come to depend on while working collaboratively with Thomson Reuters.” (Watch a video interview with Garrison)

In addition to giving community members access to world-class video and editing equipment, Eagan Community Television develops a broad range of programming including community, government and school news across six channels. The E-TV studio is now open to the public.

West focuses on service and opportunity

peterA post from Peter Warwick, president and CEO of Thomson Reuters Legal:

We held West’s national sales and account management meeting last week, the one time each year where we bring together our entire sales team to discuss the new innovations that will be part of our product and service offerings for the current year.

Among our distinguished speakers this year were Jim Jones and Joe Altonji from Hildebrandt International, who provided an update on the state of the large law firm marketplace.

We also were honored to host customers representing law firms and federal and state government agencies, including an enthusiastic panel of users of our CLEAR public records service for the government and law enforcement market.

There is no question that law firms, as well as attorneys working in state and local government, are feeling the effects of the recession. But when surrounded with colleagues who are the face of our business, and on the front line every day with our customers, I am reminded of what it is that truly sustains us: Our customers are not only the judges, attorneys, government officials and academics that make our system of justice work, but they are also our colleagues, partners and often long-time friends.

They also have the awesome responsibility of giving every U.S. citizen access to the legal system and an expectation of equal justice and the rule of law. We’re proud to be their partners in this important work.

We were prouder still to present the first-ever Stu Wolfer Distinguished Service Award at the opening dinner.

Stu Wolfer was a West sales representative supporting our customers in Idaho and Montana. He was a top performer, receiving every recognition West has to offer, as well as serving as a member of our Sales and Account Management Advisory Board and graduating from our Extraordinary Future Manager’s Program. He also was a husband, a father of three daughters and a volunteer with the Boy Scouts.

Stu served his country as a logistics officer and major in the Army Reserves and was the recipient of both the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star, which recognizes heroic achievement. Sadly, on April 6th of last year, during his second tour of duty since joining our company in 2004, he was killed in the line of duty while serving his country in Iraq.

It’s important to me that we keep his legacy alive, and the Stu Wolfer Distinguished Service Award recognizes the sales representative who best exemplifies the values and character that Stu brought to life.

This year’s award was presented to Steve Hamagiwa, senior sales consultant for West’s government channel. For 22 years, Steve has worked with some of the largest and most complex customers in the Los Angeles area. He is a top performer, a counseling mentor to his colleagues and a devoted volunteer, including the coordination of monthly dinners for homeless and disadvantaged people.

As part of Steve’s award, West will donate $5,000 to the charity of his choice, and his name will appear on a plaque that will go on display at the Eagan, Minn., campus.

I congratulate Steve on this honor and thank him for his service to his customers, colleagues and West.

I’m proud that we have colleagues like Steve and Stu that represent our company so well, and inspire all of us to reach higher – particularly in times like these.

Thomson Reuters expands services to federal government customers

Thomson Reuters has recently formed a Federal Government Initiative that will work across the entire company to serve U.S. government customers.

The new initiative will draw on the company’s existing legal, scientific, tax and other specialized products to create intelligent information solutions addressing the needs of U.S. federal government users.

Kurt Lieberman, senior vice president in the Thomson Reuters Professional Division, says that the company has hired Pamela Graff as the general manager for the Federal Government Initiative.

Ms. Graff most recently was president of PhyAmerica Government Services, where she helped double the firm’s government services revenue since 2007.

In this video interview, hear from both Kurt and Pamela about this new business initiative:

Reducing waste at work

The Eagan, Minn. facility of Thomson Reuters has been recognized with a 2008 Minnesota Waste Wise Leader Award for success in waste reduction, recycling, employee education, environmentally friendly purchasing and energy conservation.

Curt Schmidt, an environmental compliance engineer at Thomson Reuters, says the company’s commitment to the environment is demonstrated every day through things like paper and aluminum recycling, a carpool program, a “Green Fair” for employees and an internal company blog about the environment.

Waste Wise Leader Award winners are chosen once a year by a panel of judges comprising the Minnesota Waste Wise Board of Directors, the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce, the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency staff and past award winners.

Waste Wise is an affiliate program of the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce. The two other winners of its 2008 Leader Award are Great River Energy in Maple Grove, Minn., and Marvin Windows and Doors in Warroad, Minn.

The efforts of Thomson Reuters in Eagan also are featured in Waste Wise’s Annual Report.

To learn more about the program, visit the Minnesota Waste Wise Web site.
