The latest Peer Monitor Economic Index caught the attention of the Washington Post.
In an article titled “Law Firms Tightening Belts — By Request,” Mark Medice of Peer Monitor Index (PMI) is prominently featured along with Hildebrandt International.
The article discusses the challenges facing D.C.-area law firms amidst the current economic crisis.
My name is Kyong Shim and I’m a software engineer at Thomson Reuters in Eagan, Minn. Along with five of my colleagues, I volunteered to represent our business at this year’s Girls & Science 2008 event at the Science Museum of Minnesota in St. Paul on Oct. 11.
The event allowed girls in 4th grade and up to explore their interest in science and to learn more about professions in the fields of science and technology.
As one of the leading technology employers in Minnesota, I think our presence at the event helped showcase women as leaders in a variety of science and technology fields within Thomson Reuters and West.
We had a delightful time sharing our academic and professional experiences and answering questions from children as well as their parents. Many were interested in what subjects we thought they should take in school to be a good programmer, and what college-level courses would help lay a good foundation for a technology career.
The event was a great opportunity for me and my colleagues to represent Thomson Reuters to the community as intelligent, passionate, and innovative leaders and professionals!
Click on the video below to hear more of my thoughts, as well as from my colleague Wendy Thomas.
West author Ari Kaplan continues to get attention for his book, “The Opportunity Maker.” An article in the October ABA Journal, titled “Selfless Self-Promotion,” highlights Kaplan’s networking advice for law students and lawyers.
Kaplan told the ABA Journal “Self-promotion has nothing to do with promoting yourself. It has everything to do with taking time to learn what others are doing, how they are doing it, and finding ways to spotlight that good work-and in doing so develop deeper relationships.”
In addition to that article, Chicago Lawyer just posted an article highlighting Kaplan’s book. The “Around the water cooler” item notes how his arrangement with West came to be, and also how he views his book as a useful tool in today’s economic times.
“The idea is that you need to genuinely find ways to connect with people in a way that will yield inspiration as well as other benefits,” Kaplan told Chicago Lawyer. “Particularly for our [legal] community, to find ways to stand out in this stagnant economy. Things are changing, and they are changing so quickly. We really need to find ways to engage with others.”
Maclean’s, one of Canada’s leading biweekly news magazines, has named Carswell, part of the Thomson Reuters Legal division, among the Top 100 Employers in Canada for 2009.
Carswell, headquartered in Toronto, is Canada’s leading source of information solutions for legal, tax, finance and human resource professionals.
West author Ari Kaplan continues to get coverage across the Web for his book, “The Opportunity Maker,” which provides practical advice and ideas for law students and lawyers on how to establish professional relationships to attract and build legal business.
He did an interview with Carolyn Elefant for her MyShingle blog. Her audio interview is at the end of her post.
Other publications and blogs have also expressed interest in reviewing Kaplan’s book, so we’ll keep you posted. By the way, you can also check out the Westcast podcast Ari did with us in June, when his book came out, here.
Stanford Law School has released a survey of law librarians about their preference of Westlaw over LexisNexis for online legal research.
Law Librarians and LexisNexis vs. Westlaw is the work of Stanford’s Paul Lomio and Erika Wayne who conducted their survey in late April and early May, and released their report this month. It shows a preference for Westlaw among law school, law firm and government librarians represented in the survey responses.
Law school respondents preferred Westlaw at a rate of nearly four-to-one
78% of federal court/government respondents preferred Westlaw
Black’s Law Dictionary editor Bryan Garner and United States Supreme Court Associate Justice Antonin Scalia squared off in a unique live legal discussion on persuasion and argument at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. on Friday, July 25.
Garner and Scalia discussed their recent book “Making Your Case: The Art of Persuading Judges,” published by West, in a five hour continuing legal education (CLE) event. The CLE featured an entertaining and informative discussion of legal reasoning and argument, brief-writing and oral argument. The attendees included attorneys, other legal professionals and law students. Profits will go to Legal Aid.
It’s no surprise that a CLE featuring two of the preeminent authorities on legal writing and argument would generate a good deal of buzz in legal circles. Check out the links, below, to see what some media and bloggers had to say about the event:
A portion of the CLE with Scalia and Garner will soon be available – for free – through West LegalEdcenter. And, an upcoming Westcast video podcast about the event will feature highlights from the event. Keep an eye on WestBlog for more details on both.
Attorney and business consultant Ari Kaplan covers a lot of ground in his new book from West, aimed at law students and attorneys, that offers some advice for building and maintaining a successful career in the law.
Put it simply, Kaplan believes many rainmakers in law firms are made, not born.
Finding a mentoring relationship that makes an impact
Creative methods for networking to make friends, not necessarily contacts
Writing, blogging and promoting your expertise in creative ways
We interviewed Ari in a Westcast podcast. If you’re a law student blogger, or blog about legal career development or legal marketing, we’re especially interested in having you listen to it and tell us what you think of what Ari has to say.
The D conference’s Kara Swisher interviewed Glocer on a variety of topics involving Thomson Reuters during one of the sessions at the conference (Video (5 min.)/ Blog coverage) two weeks ago near San Diego.
Glocer mentioned his background as a lawyer. He also touched on the mission of Thomson Reuters to provide the content that professionals in law, and other fields, demand to do their work in efficient ways.
Garner, who teamed with United States Supreme Court Associate Justice Antonin Scalia on the book, told the newspaper he chose to work with Scalia in part because of his “great rhetorical skill.”
This blog, discontinued and moved to LegalCurrent.com in May 2009, presented commentary and information about the practice and business of law, and the products and services of the legal businesses of Thomson Reuters.
